Candidate Statements

 Brianne Meyer - President Elect
 Chief Technology Officer
 Irvine Unified School District

Over the eleven years that I have been involved in educational technology, I have personally seen how CETPA's influence has driven change. I am a candidate for President-Elect because I want to build on that momentum. I have held a variety of leadership roles in K-12.  In each role, I have come to depend on and participate in the CETPA network even more. In August 2010, I joined Irvine Unified as Chief Technology Officer.  I made the move after eight years at San Francisco Unified School District/COE, where I started as an analyst.  From 2007-2010, I was the CTO for San Francisco. In that role, I truly began to understand, and take advantage of the incredible opportunities provided by CETPA. I completed the CTO Mentor Program in 2008, and have since returned to the program as a mentor.

We are all asked to perform daily miracles.  We endeavor to create engaging, technology-rich classrooms with little more than duct tape, and the help of our dedicated colleagues.   As  CETPA President-Elect, I would work to help increase the connections across our districts and COEs, to better leverage our resources and advance policies in support of technology's role in learning.

Sean Rozell – Director at Large
Chief Technology Officer
San Rafael City School District

I have been an IT professional for the last 15 years, and have been working in public education in California for the last 5 years.  I started my IT career in the financial industry as a desktop support technician, and worked my way up to being the Director of IT Infrastructure for a large bank.

I then moved into public education, first as the IT Infrastructure Director and San Francisco Unified School District/COE, and then as the Chief Technology Officer for the San Rafael City School District.  During my time at San Francisco Unified School District/COE I was fortunate to be able to participate in the CETPA CTO Mentor Program.  It was a powerful and enriching program and it introduced me to the great work that is done by CETPA.

CETPA brings together experienced technology professionals that are currently working in California’s public education setting.  CETPA’s goal of helping to improve education in California through effective technology management and integration of technology into classroom instruction is a mission that I feel I can positively contribute to.  This mission is something that I am passionate about, and that is why I am a candidate to be a CETPA Board Member.

Rick A. Rodriguez – Director at Large
Director of Information Systems
Garden Grove Unified Unified

Given the opportunity, it would be my pleasure to share the following reasons as to why I would make a good board member for the CETPA Organization, to serve the K-12 Community in California.  I would bring to the organization my experience and knowledge I have had the privilege to gather during my sixteen years of serving in the Garden Grove Unified School District.  During my stay at Garden Grove USD, I have been fortunate to learn many aspects of a large school district.  From technology, to the business aspect of a district, as well as being part of a leadership team that has propelled this district into the future, by leveraging technology and instruction to enhance the student’s learning experience.  Not just our students, faculty and staff in our district, but hopefully for others in neighboring districts, no matter how far the distance between us.

I believe that the CETPA Organization is a vibrant, growing, and ever evolving organization that has become an elite organization and a leader in the K-12 community.  It would be my pleasure to serve as a board member, bringing ideas, concepts, and hosting conferences.  I look forward to making contributions as a team player and proponent of such an organization.  I thank you for considering me for a position within the CETPA Organization.  I will strive to assist in any means necessary to make future CETPA conferences successful with much enthusiasm.

Robert Gravina – Director at Large
Chief Technology and Information Officer
Poway Unified School District

Currently, and for the last eight years, I have served as the Chief Technology and Information Officer for the Poway Unified School District. We are a high performing district in southern California with a national reputation for technology. I believe CETPA is the premier educational technology organization in California and would be proud to be a member of the Board. I believe my experience and skills will help CETPA to continue to support its members. My goals as a member of the Board are to help continue to be the voice for technology education in Sacramento. To help build on the relationship we have developed with The Consortium of School Networking (CoSN) and to continue to grow support for other technology leaders and school districts throughout the State.

I have been a teacher and administrator for over 20 years. In my tenure in educational technology, I have participated in a variety of leadership roles including, as an appointee to the Governor’s Task Force on Broadband Access and the State’s Emerging Technologies Council. I am also a member of the San Diego County Superintendent’s Technology Advisory Committee, the Cisco Executive Advisory Council; Promethean’s Executive Advisory Council and I serve on various other State and National committees and advisory groups. I am very proud to have recently been named, IT Executive of the Year for San Diego County by the San Diego Business Journal. I have written several articles for technology journals and been a guest speaker for Education Weekly, CoSN and several other National Organizations.

Technology in education is constantly challenging us to do more and more and with budgets shrinking we are forced to do more with less. As technology leaders we must all continue to share best practices and collaborate and support each other to meet and exceed the expectations and demands we each face every day. CETPA is an important resource and support for us and I hope to be a strong contributor to these efforts. Thank you for your consideration.

Gene Smith – Director at Large
Executive Director Instructional and Technology Support Systems
Twin Rivers Unified School District

It would be an honor for me to serve on the CETPA Board of Directors and to assist passionate educators and partners in continuing to move educational technology use to unprecedented levels in California. I have been in the field of education as a teacher, coach, and administrator both in K-12 and Higher Education for the past twenty two years. During my career I have implemented innovative and cutting edge technologies to improve communications, business practices, and instructional delivery. I’ve also had the opportunity to help educators use the tools and systems in incredibly creative ways to engage and motivate their students.

I have been involved with successful efforts to promote the use of technology in education and to form policy related to educational technology with ISTE, NCCE, and AECT. When I came to California, I was delighted to become associated with CETPA because of its makeup of innovative people who are dedicated to improving the use of technology in all educational settings.  I would be very grateful for the opportunity to serve as a Board Member and bring my many years of experience and vision to help connect state level decision makers to the classrooms, leverage our numbers to increase our buying power, strengthen the collaboration between districts, and help classroom teachers realize the potential of the tools and systems that are available to them.
