Tom Dillard in the Spotlight

What city do you live in? I live in Pleasanton. I moved here 27 years ago.

Where did you retire from and what was the scope of your responsibilities? I retired from Fremont Unified School District last November 30. I was the director of information services. We supported the technology needs for 42 school sites and district office administrative applications.

How long have you been in the computer technology industry? I started way back in 1964 with Fremont Unified School District with what we called tab equipment that processed punch cards (card sorters and accounting machines, key punch). I operated that equipment and then, when the 1401 computer came to the scene, I began to get into programming. I then evolved into systems administration and finally into the director of the department, which was actually called data processing at the time.

What has been the biggest change in the industry that you have seen? I have to say going from punch card equipment to real-time online processing of information, along with the Internet access for almost anything you need.

What have you enjoyed most about your career? Helping and providing for staff and student technology solutions for business and educational needs.

What was the biggest accomplishment of your career? I don't know how many big ones I have had. However, one had to be the conversion and implementation of a major payroll system. And some would say staying with one company or district in our industry for 38 ˝ years is a big accomplishment.

When did you first become involved with CETPA? I recall it was during the early 70s.

What is the biggest benefit you have received from being a CETPA member? Meeting new colleagues in the same industry, the sharing of information, problems and solutions. It's been a great help over the years.

Why did you choose to retire? The numbers came out right. And 38 years was enough. One other thing was that I wanted to finally beat my good friend and colleague Mike Pine at something, so I retired before he could. He is going out this November.

What are your retirement plans? Lots of travel, a little golf, and to practice spontaneity.

Will you stay active in CETPA? I'm not sure. However, I will be attending the conference in November this year and am looking forward to seeing everyone.

Any words of wisdom or advice you'd like to share with fellow CETPA members? If the numbers are right do it! Thanks very much!

This new feature was suggested by Michael Pine, Information Systems Director, East Side Union High School District. Thanks for the great suggestion Michael!
